Workshops

Stroud International Textiles offer a wide range of textile skills workshops for all abilities.

WORKSHOPS & COURSES

Venue: Red Dog Studio, Five Valley Foyer Gloucester Street Stroud GL5 1QG
Date: Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th September
Time: Saturday 10 am – 4pm, Sunday 10 am – 3 pm
Fee: £55.00 for 2 days
SOLD OUT

Individually, Katharine May creates new upcycled quilted textiles using pre-loved fabrics while Clara Vuletich produces printed wallpaper and textiles using both digital and traditional print techniques. Collectively, Clara and Kate are part of bricolage, a textile collective made up of five designer/makers, all graduates from Chelsea College of Art & Design.

Creating bespoke textiles for interiors, they share an aesthetic which favours a bold use of colour, an appreciation for traditional skills and the use of sustainable materials and processes.

This two day workshop will be an introduction to creative upcycling using traditional English patchwork and quilting techniques. Inspired by recent Quilt exhibition at the V & a in London, participants will create a sample quilt piece or will be encouraged to begin a larger piece to be finished in their own time. The weekend will be informal, with an atmosphere of  sharing and pleasure.

DAY 1: will introduce you to English patchwork techniques, including paper piecing, all done by hand.

DAY 2; will introduce you to hand quilting techniques and to creating your own ‘stitched messages’ using simple embroidery techniques, inspired by the stories and lettering often found on old quilts.
Pre-loved fabrics will be provided but you are also encouraged to bring your own favourite textile pieces to use, and participants will be encouraged to join in a discussion about the stories and memories associated with these pieces.

Threads sponsored by Coats Crafts.

An Introduction to Silk Painting with tutor Jane Vernon

Venue: Red Dog Studio, Five Valley Foyer Gloucester Street Stroud GL5 1QG
Date: Saturday September 18th 2010
Time: 10 am – 5 pm
Fee: £40.00 all materials included and tea/coffee
SOLD OUT

Jane Vernon has more than 25 years’ experience as a textile artist and teacher.  Colour and natural themes form the main focus of all her textiles work.  You can see examples of Jane’s textiles work at http://www.clothandclay.co.uk

In silk painting, the designs are created by drawing onto the silk with an outliner, creating an effect similar to stained glass designs.  As well as learning how to use the gutta outliner and different ways to apply the paints, you will learn how to create the most effective designs on natural themes such as flowers, landscapes and animals.  There will be tips and even cheats, though do bring any ideas you already have if you like.  Please bring a hairdryer if you can, to maximise the length of time which can be spent painting.  You may like to wear an apron or overall as splashes of silk paints tend to be permanent.

Whether you use this workshop as a springboard to taking up silk painting or a one-off experience trying something new, a day spent silk painting is relaxing, rewarding, inspirational and fun!

To pay send a cheque made out to Stroud International Textiles and send to the office (address on contact page) with your name, address and phone number.

In my work I hope to bring together the natural beauty of willow combining its simplicity and tactile nature, and using its flexibility and strength to make each piece. My work should be touched and used. I am inspired by the woods in which I walk each day and old traditional baskets wherever they are found."
Both beginners and improvers will enjoy this workshop.
