The study of Textiles has been part of the available curriculum at Stroud College ever since it opened its doors to the community in the nineteenth century. This reflects the fact that historically, textiles were at the heart of Stroud.
Now in the twenty first century Textiles is still integral to courses in the Art School. It is taught at different levels and in many guises, to include recreational knitting, fashion and fine art. Skills are taught and innovation encouraged. The boundaries of the discipline are challenged and there is a strong interest in a cross-disciplinary approach. Textiles is linked to Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Installation, Ceramics, Fashion and more.
Stroud College is forging ever-stronger links with ITF and is very grateful that the festival offers students opportunities for exhibition and work experience; an excellent start to the world of professional practice and the creative industries.
‘Quiet Space’
JAN JOHNSON & CATHY DENNIS
Saturday 8 & 15th May – 10am – 4pm
Sunday 9 & 16th May – 11am – 4pm
Old Boys Club, Bath rd Nailsworth GL6 OHH
Two artists collaborating for the first time on a site specific project for the Textiles festival will be focusing their ideas on light, textures, and the traces retained within the building that will hold the work.
Jan Johnson is fascinated by the pathos of marks and traces that often characterise found objects. Her past poignant installation’s are suggestive of forgotten histories and takes her interest in texture, textiles and collage into three dimensions.
Cathy Dennis’s work reflects her interest and ideas about light and space. The perceived atmosphere and the colour retained. Recent works have been experiments with glass and wax in an attempt to make the intangible become physical.
The Old Boys Club in Nailsworth offers an interior space that captures both artists’ imaginations. This exhibition will aim to show both artists individual interpretations and experiences of ‘Space’ as well as responding to the site specifically to combine related ideas.
