Appointment of Non Executive Board Members

Exciting opportunity to contribute to the future of Stroud International Textiles

Stroud International Textiles, based in Stroud, is an organisation with a national reputation for excellence and innovation in contemporary textiles, crafts and the related arts. At our heart is a successful annual festival that attracts visitors from all over the UK and from Europe. It is an important part of the area’s and the town’s cultural energy and its economic growth. The festival supports the local economy and business.

It not only brings visitors to the area but raises the national and international profile of the town and disctrict.
As well as the festival SIT offers an educational and exhibitions programme. We are also part of a vibrant arts collective called Foyer Arts where theatre, music, performance, workshops take place in and around the Foyer Arts courtyard.

SIT is a Company Limited by Guarantee not for profit and we plan to go for charitable status in the near future.
We are a small organisation with a big heart, run mainly by volunteers and one part time paid Director.

We are looking to recruit at least four Non Executive Board members to contribute to our growth and future and to be part of our next phase of development. With the demands of developing a successful arts organisation we are looking for inspiring enthusiastic individuals to build our commercial future and bring together our reputation for high quality programming.

The Board’s role will:

  • Provide an overall strategic direction
  • Provide support to the executive management/directors
  • Offer advice and support for the financial strategy through business plans, budget setting and reviewing management accounts
  • Work in conjunction with the Executive management/directors to stimulate and develop new ideas to promote and build SIT
  • Review and manage all risk
  • Ensure that all Health & Safety obligations are met
  • Will ensure that Equal Opportunities are met

At the moment the Executive Board of Directors meet every 2 months and there is a working Committee who aim to meet every month.
There is also a Festival Committee who meets regularly from November to June.

We would expect the non-executive board to meet monthly but accept that this can be flexible.
Communication can take place outside the meetings of course, if this helps the success of SIT.

Skills and Experience required

Suitable candidates must have a knowledge and keen interest in contemporary and traditional textiles and all related arts and crafts. They should enjoy team working, and be attracted by the opportunity to develop SIT to its next level of excellence, efficiency and success.
As well as the above we are also looking for the following attributes in at least two of the appointees:

 Textile Arts and Related Crafts

  • Direct experience of working with the contemporary arts and crafts, preferably with some managerial responsibility
  • Good connections and a personal network in the contemporary textile arts and related crafts and performance
  • A strong knowledge of the contemporary arts and crafts scene in the UK

Commercial
We would like two of the appointees to have experience, preferably in an arts context, of one or more of the following:

  • Modern marketing techniques
  • Fundraising that includes private and corporate support

SIT is looking to work with enthusiastic people who will go beyond attendance at Board meetings, to help develop and build and promote a dynamic contemporary forward looking organisation and to raise our profile locally, regionally and nationally. Appointments would normally be for a period of two years and are unpaid.
We would expect candidates to attend monthly meetings where possible.

To discuss please do call Director Lizzi Walton on 01453 751056 or
