Mapping & Making

A workshop to investigate mapping and how it may be used to provide inspiration and new ideas for contemporary textile art. Participants will create a map which is constructed rather than drawn. New ways of joining and manipulating materials will be discovered.  Discussion will provide information and suggested directions for further exploration of this rich topic.  The emphasis will be on self directed discovery, rather than prescribed teaching techniques. Explore and experiment with unfamiliar materials, discover new methods of joining components and new ways to realize ideas.

Basic materials will be provided but if possible bringing a selection of your own materials to work with and share. You will map the park surrounding the museum so wear suitable clothing and footwear for a short walk. Coffee and tea will be provided but please bring a packed lunch.

Dail will present an illustrated presentation at the start of the workshop.
Dail Behennah has a geography degree and is a Fellow of The Royal Geographical Society. For the past 20 years she has been making constructed forms from willow and fibre using innovative techniques. A past exhibitor with the Stroud International Textile Festival she has exhibited widely in Britain, Sweden and the USA, and has work in several public collections including those of the Crafts Council, The Fitzwilliam Museum, the Walker Art Gallery and Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery. She has lectured and taught workshops both in this country and abroad. She is renowned for her elegant willow structures that epitomize a typical approach to her craft.
